<notes>ca. 520 BC. Kouros [youth] from Southern Attica, near the village of Anavyssos. It was a monumental statue set up by a tomb with the inscription on its base: 'Stay and mourn at the monument for dead Koisos whom violent Ares destroyed, fighting in the front rand'. Monumental sculpture became popular in Greece during the later 7th Century and continued well into the 6th. This particular kouros bore the name of a Lydian king, who deposed ca. 546 BC. In 1937, the statue was sawed in half and smuggled into Paris, where it remained for a time, until being returned to Greece. Other than the still apparent cut half way through the body, this statue is very well preserved. The massiveness of the proportions, specifically the shoulders and thighs, and the full bone and body structure was typical in Attic Kouri, whereas Kouri from eastern Greece tended to be more slender.</notes>

<notes>This kouros is one of the earliest marble statues of a human figure carved in Attica. The rigid stance, with the left leg forward and arms at the side, was derived from Egyptian art. The pose provided a clear, simple formula that was used by Greek sculptors throughout the sixth century B.C. In this early figure, geometric, almost abstract forms predominate, and anatomical details are rendered in beautiful analogous patterns. The statue marked the grave of a young Athenian aristocrat. He has a particularly long, slender body that is very stylized and his hair is bound back by a band which is tied in back. Typically, Attic Kouri were sculpted with a more full bone and body structure. Kouri from Greece are more characteristically slender, but this Kouros is a rather early one. He is very well preserved except for the a chunk of his nose missing on his right side and some relatively small chips on his chin, mouth, and limbs.</notes>
